A Warm Welcome to Our Friends from Asahikawa!

Day one is officially in the books for the Junior Ambassadors from Asahikawa, Japan, and it was a whirlwind of community, culture, and local favorites. Our visitors hit the ground running, experiencing the best of Bloomington-Normal through both official ceremonies and classic American pastimes.

Building Bonds at City Hall

The morning began with a touch of diplomacy and a lot of heart. The Junior Ambassadors visited Bloomington City Hall for a special meeting with Mayor Dan Brady. The group participated in a traditional gift exchange, sharing beautiful tokens from Asahikawa while receiving a warm McLean County welcome. It was a wonderful reminder of the deep-rooted friendship between our Sister Cities.

A Mayor-Led Lunch

You can't visit Central Illinois without a quick, local bite! The students headed over to Jimmy John’s for a classic sub sandwich lunch. They weren't alone, though—Normal Mayor Chris Koos joined the group to welcome them to the Town of Normal, proving that some of the best conversations happen over a "Freaky Fast" meal.

Making Their Mark on History

The group then took a deep dive into our local heritage at the McLean County Museum of History. In a truly symbolic moment, the students officially marked Asahikawa on the museum’s map, literally putting their hometown on the map here in Bloomington-Normal!

Games and Gadgets

The afternoon was all about local fun and discovery. The students spent time at Red Raccoon Games, diving into the vibrant tabletop gaming culture that our community loves so much.

To top off the afternoon, the ambassadors experienced a true "rite of passage" for any international visitor: their very first trip to Target! From browsing the aisles for snacks to seeing the sheer scale of an American department store, it was an afternoon full of wide eyes and excitement.

What’s Next?

After a busy first day, the Junior Ambassadors are now heading off to spend the weekend with their host families! We know our local families have some incredible activities planned to show them what daily life is like in Central Illinois.

The group will reunite on Monday to continue their tour of Bloomington-Normal. We can't wait to hear about their weekend adventures!
