Following a busy introduction to Bloomington-Normal, our Junior Ambassadors from Asahikawa, Japan, spent this past weekend fully immersed in American culture, courtesy of their wonderful host families!

While we had a blast during our official tours, the true heart of the Sister City program lies in these personal connections. Host families opened their homes and hearts, providing a weekend filled with unforgettable experiences that took our guests well beyond McLean County.

The Great Midwest Adventure

The ambassadors truly became explorers this weekend! Depending on their host family's plans, they spread out across Illinois and even crossed state lines:

The Windy City: Some lucky ambassadors headed north to Chicago! We can only imagine their reactions to the magnificent skyline, a walk through Millennium Park, and perhaps their very first taste of authentic deep-dish pizza!
The Gateway City: Others traveled south to St. Louis! They got to see the iconic Gateway Arch (and maybe even rode to the top!), perhaps caught a baseball game, or explored the incredible museums of Forest Park.
Lincoln’s Legacy: History came alive for the ambassadors who visited our state capital, Springfield! They were able to step back in time at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, gaining a firsthand understanding of American history.
Hometown Heroes: Of course, many ambassadors stayed local and dove even deeper into the charm of Bloomington-Normal! Host families showed off their favorite local parks, hidden gem restaurants, and family-friendly activities, proving that there is always more to discover right here at home.

The Power of Connection

Regardless of the destination, the goal of the weekend was the same: connection and cultural exchange. These shared adventures—navigating a large city, trying new foods, or simply relaxing in an American living room—build bridges of understanding that last a lifetime. The laughter, stories, and shared meals are the moments where true friendship is born.

The Jr. Ambassadors are having a fantastic time, and the experiences they had this weekend will be cherished long after they return to Japan.
